Grounding

Something in me is shifting
in the quiet places—
ankles sunk in river mud,
water pulling the heat
of the past out of me.

A presence gathers
at the edge of vision,
just close enough
to stir the leaves.
I do not ask its name.

I watch the wake undo itself
and feel myself sink deeper
until the world narrows
to water, mud, and breath.
